Hasna Hits World Rankings

(Hassie with some of her Beeches friends)

On Saturday 2nd June instead of attending a Jubilee Party Hasna Hakim, of Perry Beeches SSS, spent the day at the World Class Talent Camp held in the 50 metre pool at Loughborough University.  This was held for Disability Swimmers all of whom have achieved top 40 in the IPC (International Paralympic Committee) World Rankings and was attended by 26 swimmers and 20 coaches.

The day was split into two 2 Hour training sessions in the pool split by lunch and a presentation entitled “What It Takes To Be The Best”.  Each pool session was preceded by  20 minutes of stretching and warm up before entering the water and followed by 15 minutes stretching.  The morning session totalling 4000 metres included 20 times 100 metres kick against the clock; a challenge for any swimmer.  The afternoon was no less challenging and totalled 4300 metres.  This makes a total for the day of 8300 metres or for those of you who still work in miles, approximately 5.2 miles.

Hasna was complimented on her work ethic and received an award for not missing a tumble turn throughout the whole session, the only swimmer to do so.  Hasna was a credit to both her club and her coaches.

Where does Hasna stand in the IPC World Rankings.  Firstly you need to understand something of the way disability is rated.  Hasna is S10, SB9 and SM10.  S stands for Swimming, the B is a subsection for Breaststroke and M for Medley.  The numbers show the degree of disability, the lower the number the more the impairment.  The Rankings are also divided into Long Course, a 50 metre pool which is where Paralympic Selection is made and Short Course which is the more common 25 metre pool.
