To swim butterfly over a distance of 10m

Advanced 1 Levels 9 and 10

This phase consolidates the wider range of associated aquatic disciplines beginning to prepare for competition.

Advanced 2 Levels 10 and 11

Further development of the main swimming strokes and begins to approach swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle and continues with more advanced activities. They begin to develop both:

Basic aerobic swimming endurance

Swimming at speed.

Getting Ready for Competition

Pre-Competition Development Awards 1 and 2

This stage lays the foundations for young swimmers to take part in a developmental coaching and training programme in preparation for competitive swimming. Great emphasis is placed on:

Skills and Strokes are performed correctly

Speed.

Assessment takes place throughout each level and at the end of each unit of work. A swimmer cannot move onto the next level unless the required skills are obtained.

Skills to be developed are: 1. Agility, Balance, Coordination, and Speed.

Running, Jumping, Throwing.

Gliding Buoyancy, Striking with the body.

Catching, kicking, and striking with an implement.

Speed, power and endurance should be developed. In addition, children should be introduced to the simple rules and ethics of sport.

The key to a programme for this age group should be well structured with progression and monitored regularly.

Swimming should focus on all four strokes (skill acquisition) with an emphasis on speed.

Lessons should be 30 – 35min in duration.

Frequency – 3-4 times a week.

ASA Award Levels – Module 3 – Module 4

Competition: Club Championships, Intra Club Competitions, Local mini leagues.

Should only train 11 months of the year.

Energy Systems

EN1 (Basic Endurance Training)

Sprinting

EN1 – Provides a period of time when the rate of glycogen (energy in the muscles) used is reduced below the rate of repletion so that the muscles can replace the glycogen used during Threshold sets. However, training intensity is maintained that will improve some aspects of aerobic capacity. The effect of this type of endurance training means that they will be able to perform more/better during threshold endurance training. Basic Endurance Training should be used extensively in the first 2 – 6 weeks of training (Preparation Period).
